Condensation in buildings is mainly a winter problem particularly where warm, moist air is generated in areas of occupancyand then penetrates to the colder parts of the building. This can result from a number of things in both residential and commercial buildings including cooking, bathing, washing dishes and/or clothes, heating, humidifying, etc. Condensation may be more acute in buildings with inadequate ventilation. In relation to Solatube Daylighting Systems, the condensation occurs when warm moist air enters into the tubing. Most likely, if there is condensation occurring in the Solatube Daylighting System, there is probably condensation around other parts of the building such as on windows, doors and skylights.

Because there are so many variable factors that may contribute to condensation in a home, Solatube International, likemost window and skylight companies, does not cover condensationunder the manufacturers warranty.

Recognizing that condensation cannot be eliminated, Solatube International has made design changes to its Daylighting Systems over the years to help address this subject.Your local Solatube specialty dealer is best suited to determine if these improvements or other modifications will help minimize condensation in your Solatube Daylighting System. Please be aware that because condensation is not covered under warranty, there may be a charge for the service call and/or additional parts.Your Solatube specialty dealer may suggest adding additional components that have been developed to minimize condensation such as a Dome Upgrade Kit, Flashing Insulator, Climate Control Lens or Severe Climate Glazing.

The Solatube Daylighting System is designed to be a sealed unit. All assemblies (dome, flashing, tubing, diffuser) have seals to stop bug and dirt infiltration. The maintenance free design and shape of the dome and flashing eliminates debris build-up. Unlike traditional skylights, there is no open drywall shaft that requires cleaning and re-painting.

We offer a suite of Effect Lenses to adjust the light to soften or warm the light color. For those who prefer less light, we offer the Softening Effect Lens that creates a subtle, softer natural lighting effect. The optional Solatube Daylight Dimmer can also be installed to allow control of the light output.

The Warm/Warm SofteningEffect Lens enhances natural daylight by warming the light creating a color comparable to incandescent bulbs. Never use standard window tinting or any flammable material to block the incoming light. This is an extreme fire hazard.

For the SolaMaster Series we offer a secondary diffuser that fits under the dome to soften the light if necessary.

To answer this question we first need to understand what wavelengths of radiation are emitted through a Solatube Daylighting System. Solatube Daylighting Systems utilize two technologies to eliminate UV radiation and reduce heat frominfrared(IR)wavelengths from entering the building interior as follows:

The first technology is related to the domes. Solatube acrylic outer domes have special UV inhibitors designed to block 100% of UVB (280 to 315 nanometers), 100% UVC (100 to 280 nanometers) and 98.5% UVA (315 to 400 nanometers) rays.

The second technology is related to the tubing. Spectralight Infinity tubing transmits the visible spectrum of light (400 to 760 nanometers). The infrared spectrum of light (above 760 nanometers) is not transmitted by the Spectralight Infinity tubing.

With this information in mind, the following subjects can be addressed:

Plant Growth

There are a few factors to consider when determining if a Solatube Daylighting System will have an effect on plant growth in conjunction with the above information. The first factor would be how much UV, if any, the particular plant will need for proper growth. Second, the size of the product you are using may impact how much light the plant will be able to obtain. It is also important to point out that the Solatube Daylighting System removes a majority of the infrared wavelengths, which only provide heat to the plants. This substantially reduces any heat related stress problems that may occur with indoor plants.

Typically plant growth occurs between 400 and 1000 nanometers. Based on this data, it would be safe to say that in general a Solatube Daylighting System will have a positive effect on plant growth depending on that particular plants UV requirements.

Solar Heat Gain

With the infrared blocking capabilities of the Spectralight Infinity tubing, removing greater than 50% of the heat from the infrared wavelengths (>900 nanometer's) of the sun with every reflection on the tube surface, the Solar Heat Gain of Solatube products is greatly reduced, which in turn will reduce the air conditioning load requirement for the space being daylit. These technologies allow Solatube Daylighting Systems to provide the highest light output performance with minimal thermal impact.

UV Effect on Skin and Vitamin D

The differentUVwavelengthseffectskin in the followingways: UVA -The lowestenergyrange,UVAcauses little burning ordinarily, but itpenetrates deeply, beyond the surface layer of the skin.Over long periods of exposure,UVAcauseswrinkling andpremature aging of the skin.

UVB -More energetic, thechief burning and tanning rayswhich areamajor factorin producing skin cancer, although not penetratingbeyond the skin.

UVC -The most energetic, intenselyburning rays. Fortunately,UVCis mostly absorbed by the earth'ssunscreen, the ozone layer.

Concerning Vitamin D it is synthesized in the skin when UV rays react with a compound within skin between the 270-300 nanometers wavelengths, with peak synthesis between 295-297 nanometers. Based on this informationthe SolatubeDaylighting Systems do not transfer the required UV for Vitamin D synthesis as it will block all of the UVB and UVC rays, which fall between the 100-315 nanometer ranges.

Note: The UV information in this article is specific to Solatube Daylighting Systems - other TDD products may not provide the same performance standards.

Recommended Maximum Tube Run

Solatube 160 DS (10 in/250 mm) Brighten Up Series 20' (6m)

Solatube 290 DS (14 in/350 mm) Brighten Up Series 30' (9m)

Solatube330 DS and 750 DS(21 in/530 mm) SolaMaster Series 50' (15m)

Your ceiling diffuser is quite easy to remove and clean. Please note that older Solatube Daylighting Systems (Installed before the year 2000) have twist-lock diffusers for the 10 in/250 mm & 14 in/350 mm. For these older units the diffuser twists off counter clockwise when looking up at the diffuser.

If you have a unit that was installed between 2000 & 2007, to remove the diffuser simply pry down one edge of the white trim ring using something flat such as a butter knife. Continue to work your way around the ring until you have a 1/4" (7mm) or so gap all the way around. Then simply grab onto the edges and pull straight down. The diffuser lens can be cleaned with soap and water. To re- install the diffuser position the 4 zip style ties into the 4 holes on the ceiling ring and push up until the diffuser is flush with the ceiling.

If you have a unit that was installed between 2007&2010, simply pull the diffuser down.

If you have a diffuser that was purchased after September 2010, you'll need to twist off the diffuser counter-clockwise.

Yes.There are, however, afewthings tobe aware of inthese typesof applications. Because of theexcessmoisture inthe showeryou may experiencecondensation, which is not coveredunder the warranty as it is a natural occurrence. You willwant to make surethere is properventilation andit wouldbe recommended to utilize theNatural Effect Lensfor ClimateControl tominimize theair exchange betweentheshower and inside of the tubing asmuch as possible.

There is no minimum distance! Applications without anattic space, vaulted ceilingsor open beam ceilings are quite common. In very short spaces the tubing may need to be modified to fit the space. This can be done easily by cutting the tubing to the desired length. Note that is recommended to have a straight tube run when installing into small spaces.

All diffusers are designed to be highly attractive and unobtrusive on the ceiling. They feature a sleek dress ring that transitions the lens to the ceiling with a beveled edge. The dress ring is injection molded with impact resistant acrylic.

There are currently two options for ceiling diffuser lenses. Both are dual glazed and designed to effectively diffuse the natural sunlight throughout the room.

Vusion Diffuser:For outstanding light diffusion that artfully blends to the ceiling plane, select the Vusion diffuser. The fresh design harmonizes with most dcor, yet provides the radiance of natural light.

OptiView Diffuser:Allows a view of the sky through a series of high-tech radial lenses. This high-tech lens is highly effective at diffusing light and minimizing glare. The OptiView diffuser not only looks great but also adds some additional features to the Solatube skylights that no other product can match. This revolutionary diffuser lens bends the light exiting our Spectralight Infinity optical tubing upward approximately 85 degrees which provides much better light dispersion. The other wonderful feature is that when you look up through the lens you see miniature views of the sun, moon and sky.

Also available is a softening lens. This option is installed at the diffuser level and diffuses the light, delivering a softer light. It is primarily used in very sunny markets where occasionally customers feel their Solatube Daylighting Systems are too bright. We recommend waiting two weeks after installing a new Solatube Daylighting System to adjust to the new light

Yes, if there is a closet or place for the tubes to run from the roof through the house to the first floor or to the basement. A Solatube 290 DS is recommended due to the long distance from the roof. Usually a chase is built around thetubing for added protection.

The Solar Star attic fan runs best when the solar panel is in direct sunlight. The unit will run at a reduced speed in the shade (provided the sky is bright) but if one has heavy shading for a good portion of the day an "Add-onSolar Panel" for the Solar Star is a great idea. An extra panel can be placed up to 15' (4.5m) away (possibly on the opposite side of the roof with all-day sun exposure) from the main roof unit to provide better all day performance.

No. It is not possible to connect 2 diffusers to one dome. In order to gain the maximum light possible to your room, Solatube International uses a 1-to-1 product design matching the dome to the diffuser. There is no "Y" adapter available for Solatube Daylighting System.

Light output will be reduced but the dome will be fine. Tests have indicated that all size models of the Solatube Daylighting Systems can resist positive snow loads of up to150 pounds per square foot. For more information and to review the CCRR test report click on the link below.

Installation of a Solatube Daylighting System is very easy. An experienced contractor or handyman can do it in a few hours. The Solatube Daylighting System is designed with a patented fastening and telescoping tube system that virtually eliminates the need to enter the attic. Additionally, many components are pre-assembled at the factory for minimum assembly time.

The Solatube Daylighting System captures light through a dome on the roof and channels it down through our internal reflective system. This tubing is far more efficient than a traditional drywall skylight shaft, which can lose over half of the potential light. The tubing will fit between rafters and will install easily with no structural modification. At the ceiling level, a diffuser that resembles a recessed light fixture spreads the light evenly throughout the room.

All parts are covered by a 10-year warranty. Electrical components are covered by a 5-year warranty.

?The dome is made from high quality acrylic resin that is specifically formulated for increased impact strength, chemical, weather resistance and high clarity. For High Velocity Hurricane Zone areas we have available the Shock Inner Dome for the Brighten Up Series. For the SolaMaster Series we offer a Polycarbonate inner dome.

?The tubing is made from puncture proof aluminum sheet with a UV protective covering.

The Solar Star attic fan by designis meantto run whenever daylight strikes the solar panel. Attics are meant to be ventilated year round, during the winter proper ventilation helps prevent condensation from forming within the attic which could cause significant heat loss from the home if the attic insulation gets wet. A cool, dry attic is the best solution for keeping the heat in the house during the winter. If your attic is properly insulated and moisture build up is not a concern but cold temperatures are a concern thenconsiderusing theoptional Solar Star Thermal Switch.

The Solar Star does not have an on/off switch buttheoptionalSolar Star Thermal Switch can be added that will turn off the Solar Star when the temperature in the attic is below 65 F (18C) and will turn on the Solar Star when the temperature in the attic is greater than 85F (29C).

Traditional skylights have their place, as do Tubular Daylighting Devices. There are a few key benefits of the Solatube Daylighting System, however, including flexible location options, low cost of installation and better lighting performance. Also, traditional skylights do not offer any optical enhancement devices to help increase performance. On the north side of a sloped roof, the light output from a regular skylight is significantly reduced without these devices.

The Solatube Daylighting System, for example, features several patented enhancement devices, which work in concert to capture more light from all angles and reflect it down the tube for higher light output during early morning, late afternoon and in the winter months when the sun is low on the horizon.

The Solatube Daylighting System transfers the maximum amount of ambient light into a room with minimal light loss, allowing it to provide great performance even on cloudy or rainy days. In fact, it captures ambient light so well, on a full-moon night, you can actually see a nice glow.

The Solatube Daylighting Systems proprietary fan/motor is rated at 110-CFM (cubic feet per minute;3 cubic Meters per minute)

which is of a much higher performance than a standard bathroom vent that most of us have in our homes. This ensures quick and effective ventilation.

This is a symptom of attic condensation due to inadequate ventilation. Wrapping the tube with insulation can help, but is not the cure for the larger problem. Need further ventilation? Try one of our Solar Star ventilation systems!

The LightTracker Reflector captures light that would otherwise pass through the dome and redirects into the tube. More light input means more light output. Raybender 3000 Technology increases the early morning and late afternoon performance, while at the same time rejecting over-powering, summertime mid-day light to reduce glare and heat.

The tubing system is not designed for exposed exterior applications. For internal applications the standard angle adapters provide a 30 degree maximum angle. A 90-degree angle adaptor is also available that will produce minimal light loss.

The Solatube Daylighting System circular one piece seamless flashing design allows rain and debris to naturally bypass the unit. The Solatube flashings have no joints or weak points that may separate and allow water to enter. Traditional skylights have a reputation of leaking. Many times this is an issue of incorrect installation, but their square design invites problems. First, the flat up-slope side collects branches, leaves and other debris, which interferes with proper drainage. As the water dams up, it migrates under shingles or tiles to find an escape route, causing leaking.

Residentially, the light coverage area for Solatube 160 DS (10 in/250 mm Daylighting System)isapproximately 200 square feet (19 sq meter),fora Solatube 290 DS (14 in/350 mm Daylighting System) it isapproximately 300 square feet (28 sq meter). These estimated lighting areas are based upon an average 6' (1.82m) tube length and 8' (2.4m) ceiling height, with the dome being in direct sunlight. Light output will vary depending on the intensity of the sun. For example, there will be more natural daylight at mid-day than in the earlymorning or evening. Light output may also decrease as the length of tube increases beyondthe recommended distances. ForCommercialBuildingapplications, please consult a Solatube Daylight Consultant or Commercial Distributor, or use Solatube photometric data in conjunction with lighting design tools. Acceptable illuminated areas will greatly vary due to ceiling heights, space uses, and geographic location.

The Solatube Daylighting Systemhas two available light kit options for the Brighten Up Series: Compact Fluorescent Light Add-On Kit Add a compact fluorescent fixture to use the Solatube Daylighting System as a recessed light fixture at night. Accepts (1) 26-watt compact fluorescent lamp (GX24q-3 Base, 26W 4-pin). Meets California Title 24 bath light requirements. (2) fixtures may be used with the 290 DS. Universal Light Add-On Kit with Medium Screw Base Add on a light fixture to use the Solatube Daylighting Device as a recessed light fixture at night. The 160 DS Light Add-On Kit accepts (1) Compact Fluorescent Lamp, Medium Base - 23 Watt Maximum, Total Maximum Length 4 3/4 in (120 mm). The 290 DS Light Add-On Kit accepts (2) Compact Fluorescent Lamps, Medium Base - 23 Watt Maximum, Total Maximum Length 4 3/4 in (120 mm).

Raybender 3000 Technology is a patented componentof Solatube products thatintercepts low angle light and redirects it down the tube. The light is actually reflected down the tubing at a steeper angle, in order to minimize the amount of times the light must reflect (which reduces light output). The end result is more light! The technology allows the Solatube Daylighting System to capture much more early morning light and early evening light. With this technology, owners of Solatube products can enjoy natural daylight for longer periods of time.Raybender 3000 Technology is just one of the components of Solatube products that distinguishesSolatubeDaylightingSystemsfrom otherTubular DaylightingDevices on the market.

A Solatube Daylighting System works well on the north side of a house. However, it does work best when it is exposed to direct sunlight. Therefore it performs better where it receives as much direct South facing sunlight as possible. The reverse of North and South is true for the southern hemisphere. A turret extension can also be added to raise the dome height so it catches more direct sunlight.

The product warranty for all Solatube Daylighting System components is 10 years and 5 years for all electrical components.

Finding the cause is the first step for addressing condensation. Once the cause has been addressed then there area number of steps that can be taken to reduce the potential for condensation. Listed below are just a few steps that can be done to help minimize the occurrence of condensation.

  1. oAlways make sure round holes are cut in the roof deck, whether using the self flashing or the curbmounted cap. Square holes cut in the roof deck will let too much warm moist air into the flashing or curb cavity.
  2. oInstall a flashing insulator. The flashing insulator reduces the amount of warmer air from the interior of a building from hitting the cold metal underside of the flashing. When installing a flashing insulator on a curbmounted unit, set the flashing insulator with a spray adhesive to the roof deck, centering over the round hole in the roof deck.
  3. oPushing insulation material into the space between the flashing and the tubing will reduce the volume of warm interior air that can hit the colder metal of the flashing. Where curbs are used, push insulation into the cur cavity, filling the curb cavity's air space to equalize the temperature.
  4. Seal the penetration where the tubing comes through theroof deck to mitigate warm, moistair from making contact with theflashing. An expanding foam sealant or insulation are the most common ways of sealing the penetration where the tube comes through the roof deck.
  5. Ensure the dome is not incorrectly sealed onto the flashing. Solatube Daylighting Systems are designed to allow some air transfer from the interior of the system to the exterior. This allows moist air to escape, while also enabling any droplets of water, which may have formed on the dome, to escape via weep holes in the dome.
  6. Insulate the tubing in extreme cold climates. Wrapping the tubing in insulation will help reduce the possibility of condensation. Be sure to insulate the entire tube run from the roof deck to the ceiling plane leaving no gaps in the insulation.
  7. When penetrating the ceiling, if a vapor barrier was present, ensure that the vapor barrier is maintained and sealed off once the Solatube Daylighting System has been installed.

Both the Solatube 160 DS (10 in/250 mm Daylighting System) and 290 DS (14 in/350 10" (250mm) fit easily between roof rafters with no structural changes, so there is no need to build a skylight shaft. Our adjustable tubing design includes two Spectralight Infinity angle adaptors that allow installation around attic obstructions and Spectralight Infinity extension tubing in 16" (400mm) and 24" (600mm) segments. All are designed to telescope together for easy installation with no cutting necessary.

No, the Solatube Daylighting System only transfers the available sunlight that enters through the dome. However, the optional Light Add-On Kit may be used so that the Solatube Daylighting System doubles as a standard lighting fixture with just the flick of a switch at night.

There are no batteries on the Solar Star that will store energy. TheSolar Staronly runs when daylight is available on the solar panel.

Yes, and Solatube Daylighting Systems install easily without structural modifications. Solatube Daylighting Systems are a great solution for the dark interiors from windows shaded by carports and patio covers. A Solatube 160 DS is usually adequate since tube lengths are short. Also, a softening lens is often recommended.

With the Solatube Daylighting System operating during daylight hours, electric lights are off which means no energy consumption. Also the Solatube Daylighting System has insignificant heat gain, so air conditioning or heating are not affected. Alternatively, more heat would be lost through a small closed window.

Yes. The Solatube 160 DS & 290 Ds are ENERGY STAR rated and have minimal heat transfer. Additionally, the dome ring acts as a thermal break between the flashing and tubing preventing thermal transfer.

A key feature of this product is that the fan/motor is not positioned at the ceiling, but in-line up in the attic. This significantly reduces the noise level in the room below.

At this time there are no sun level test standards availabledue to thefact thatremote mountedfannoise levelsareinproportionto thefollowing:Type ofduct, lengthofduct, fandistance from intakesourceandother miscellaneous factors. However, it is generally accepted that remote mounted venting is usually quieter than standard (in-room) venting.

Solatube Daylighting System kits include high quality foil tape to seal all tubing seams. This keeps bugs and dust from entering the system ensuring maintenance free installation. The tube sections are also fastened with provided self-tapping screws for further structural integrity.

Spectralight Infinitytubing uses a proprietary technology with unique indices of reflection and internal refraction to more effectively reflect light and direct it down the tube. The result is natural daylight output that defies what was once considered scientifically impossible.

Spectralight Infinity has the highest reflectivity of any material used inTubular DaylightingDevices- 99.7%* -There is no significant light or color loss as the sun's rays are transferred through the tubing. The result is the brightest, cleanest, natural light possible today.

If the tubes have been left in the sun or exposed to heat, the protective lining may not want to come off. In this instance the tubing would need to be replaced asthe liningwill have baked to the tubing, taking care to not leave the replacementtubing in the sun or exposed to heat.

The Solar Star attic fan is whisper quiet and would likely not be audible from within the house or in the yard.

WithSpectralight Infinity, less than 1% of the daylight is lost with each "bounce" of daylight down the tube. Thisbecomes increasingly important for the winter months, early morning or late afternoon hours, and overcast days.At these times, the reflected daylight may make hundreds of bounces down thetubing, which would result in minimal usable light output for Tubular Daylighting Devices using less reflective materials (where 8% or more of the light is "lost" with each bounce). However, with Spectralight Infinity, the advantages are clear, over 500% more light output for these normally problematic daylight hours, resulting in radiant, useful daylight in your home or office!

Yes. They can be combined with any Solatube 160 DS for a 3-in-1 fixture (vent, daylighting system, electric light).

For Open Ceiling configurations (Solatube 330 DS-O and 750 DS-O), the diffuser has notches that aredesigned to attach directly to an extension tube that is notched to match the diffusers. The top tube angle adapter, bottom tube angle adapter and the0-90 degree angle adaptersdo not attached directly toanOpen Ceilingdiffuseras they are a slightly different diameter than the extension tubes and also are not pre-notched to accept the diffuser.

For Closed Ceiling configurations (Solatube 330 DS-C and 750 DS-C), the diffuser attaches directly to the transition box.It cannot attach directly to the top tube angle adapter, bottom tube angle adapter,the0-90 degree angle adapter, or an extension tube.

Aminimum of 12 1/2 inchesbetween ceiling joists and a minimum of 12 inches of vertical clearance above the ceiling is required in order to use the ventilation add-on kit. It is also important to note that service access is required to the fan motor assembly junction box.

The Solatube Daylighting System offers a series of add-on kits for the Brighten Up Series that allow the user to minimize the number of ceiling penetrations and fixtures within the living area by combining the Solatube Daylighting System with a light fixture and/or a bathroom vent fixture.

Yes, more than two systems can be installed in one large space. However, prior to installation, please keep in mind the following information: Sincethe Smart LED Systemcontrols a maximum of 2 units synchronously, any additional Smart LED units will be controlled separately. This may result in the LED being on/off at different times for example, the LEDs may come on in 2 units but not the other(s) because of potential shading on the roof or other conditions.

LEDs are not designed to be replaced like traditional lamps or bulbs. If the Smart LED system is not working please contact your Solatube representative for assistance.

The Smart LED utilizes 3000K LEDs to match typical residential light fixtures. These 3000K LEDs offer a warmer color light similar to an incandescent light bulb. The LED light output is equivalent to 1 x 100 watt light bulb.

No. The Smart components for the Smart LED system are factory set for maximum energy efficiency. The LEDs will only come on when the daylight sensor determines light levels are low enough to trigger the LEDs.

A 160 DS Daylight Dimmer fits to the 10 inch bottom angle adapter of the Solatube Smart LED. Please note, a separate switch is used to operate the Solatube Daylight Dimmer.

For additional assistance, please contact your Solatube representative.

No. Currently, theSmart LED systemcannot be used with a dimmer switch. The LED lights are not dimmable at this time.

No, the Smart LED is not compatible with a Ventilation Add-OnKit. If you are interested in daylight with an integrated vent, we have the 160 DS which is available with a Light Add-On Kit that utilizes screw-in CFL bulbs.

No, because the Solatube Smart LED system utilizes both the 10 inchand 14 inch components.

No, we currently only offer the Smart LED with 3000K LEDs.

No! The Smart LED requires no maintenance and you dont have to worry about replacing bulbs because they are designed to last 20 years. The daylighting components (dome, tubing, etc.) are designed to be maintenance free as well.Occasionally, you may need to wipe off the diffuser or decorative fixture. See our Ownership & Care Guide for more information.

Yes! The Daylight Dimmer is installed on top of the bottom angle adapter.

The PrimarySystemincludes theLEDs, a daylight sensor and a driver.

The SecondarySystem onlyincludes theLEDs. It does notinclude the daylight sensor nor thedriver asthe Secondary Systemtakes commands from the PrimarySystem.

The reflection of light is extremely predictable. When light strikes a surface, it is either absorbed or reflected. Total reflectance indicates the percentage of light that is reflected, regardless of the direction it travels after leaving the surface. A surfaces total reflectance can consist of both specular and diffuse components. To illustrate this, imagine a ray of light as a tight bundle of smaller, individual rays, all traveling parallel to each other. In accordance with the Law of Reflection, rays that strike a smooth surface will reflect and remain in a concentrated bundle. This is called specular reflection and represents a mirror-like reflection of light. On the other hand, rays that strike a rough, or diffuse, surface will reflect and scatter in many directions through diffuse reflection.

While a diffuse surface can have a high total reflectance, the reflected light is scattered, which prevents it from being transmitted in a consistent and tightly-controlled fashion. For Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs), a high specular reflectance is imperative so that light can be efficiently transferred through the system. A tubing system with a diffuse reflectance component should be avoided since that would result in light being scattered and lost back out through the top of the system.

The SpectralightInfinity Tubing used in SolatubeDaylighting Systems is the most reflective material used in TDDs. With an extremely high specular reflectance of up to 99.7%* over the visible portion (ranging between 380-760 nanometers (nm)) of the electromagnet spectrum, it ensures that very little light is lost as it travels through the optical tubing system.

Achieving a high specular reflectance is critical since even small differences in reflectance values can significantly impact light output. Thats because every time a ray of light is reflected, some amount of that light is either scattered or lost through absorption. The difference of just a few percentage points in specular reflectivity makes a huge difference in overall performance.

Contrary to total reflectance, specular reflectance is a key factor in determining an optical tubes efficiency in transferring light, and manufacturers should provide specular reflectance data to document the true efficiency of their TDD systems

Yes! Any of the Decorative Fixtures can be added to the Smart LED to provide a beautiful look in your home.

Light Transfer Efficiency (LTE) measures how effectively and consistently daylight is transferred through a TDDs optical tubing system and into a room for all daylight hours of the year. This factor is closely linked with the specular reflectance associated with a systems tubing material. The higher the specular reflectance, the more efficient and consistent the transportation of light is. A high LTE typifies a product that limits light loss and, therefore, delivers an even and dependable amount of light to an interior, regardless of season or weather condition.

The ability of a typical daylighting fenestration product, like a Tubular Daylighting Device, to capture low-angled winter light may differ significantly from its ability to capture high-angled summer light. The ratio of summer to winter light output can be an indicator of the products effectiveness in delivering (or not delivering) consistent light throughout the course of a year. Ideally, a daylighting product will produce uniform levels of output regardless of season (or climatic conditions), resulting in steady and reliable interior illumination despite variations in exterior conditions or seasonal changes in the daylighting resource.

Color temperature Maintenance (CTM) is a measure of how well a system can deliver reflected light without a color shift. The specific measured L*a*b color model performance parameters associated with a reflective surface are used to determine the spectral consistency of light as it is transferred through a tubular system. A high CTM denotes a product that produces minimal color / spectral shift of the light, which makes it a highly desirable light source for interior illumination.

No, the Smart LED SecondarySystem comes pre-assembled with a 15 foot cord. This is the maximum length that the units can be installed apart.
